Dale Washburn served in the United States Army as a Specialist 5th Class (E-5). He was drafted on August 12, 1970, with Lottery Number 149 and entered active duty on August 13, 1970.
Washburn completed Basic Combat Training at Fort Campbell in Kentucky, where he trained in core soldier skills followed by weapons proficiency (including M-16 marksmanship), night training, hand to hand combat, and field operations. His final training phase included convoy operations, urban terrain instruction, and field exercises.
On October 15, 1970, Washburn was assigned to advanced training at Fort Eustis in Virginia, in the Army Transportation School. There, he received on the job training and education in all modes of transportation, aviation maintenance, logistics, deployment doctrine, and research. These soldiers played vital roles in the Vietnam War in the air, on land, and at sea specializing in port, railroad, and motor vehicle operations along with helicopter maintenance.
On June 16, 1971, Washburn was assigned to Fort Story, Virginia, where he served as a Morning Reports Specialist and Clerk Typist in personnel administration. In this role, he maintained unit accountability records and supported administrative operations. His Military Occupational Specialty was 71B30 Clerk Typist.
During his service, Washburn was promoted to Specialist 5th Class (E-5) in less than 18 months. His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Sharpshooter Badge (M-16), and the Good Conduct Medal, reflecting his performance, discipline, and marksmanship skills.
He was honorably discharged on February 14, 1972, completing his active-duty service.
Following his military career, Washburn has remained active in veteran service organizations. He is a member of The American Legion Post #170 Chanute, Kansas and Elks Lodge #2505 of Kimberling City. He is a life member of the Veterans of the Ozarks, where he has served in leadership roles including Vice President, Board of Director, Chairman of the Suicide Prevention Committee, and Chairman of the Fund-Raising Committee. He continues to serve on the Honor Guard and Color Guard Team and as Chairman of the Annual Fiscal Audit Committee. He also volunteers in veteran commemorative events such as Branson Veterans Welcome Home Week, continuing his community service and support for fellow veterans.
